Game Elements; The Connecting Cells of a Game.

All games have a core set of elements within them. Each and every game have a set of qualities that may be applicable to them. These qualities are like the cells of a body. Cells provide structure for the body. Without a set of them, then the body can't properly function. Same can be said for a game.

In this blog, we'' be looking and discussing each of these parts and their definitions and how they all fit together.

Game Elements

So what are the qualities of a game? After reading an article called What are the Qualities of Games? I've come to understand that all games have a recurring theme to them. From separating the definitions that define a game, we can see that games share the same rules of rules, conflicts, decision-making and uncertainty. These "atoms", that they're referred to within the document, are essentially the building blocks to a game and how a game functions.

I can certainly agree with this statement. These atoms as stated are the building blocks required to make a function and working game. Without one of these atoms, we cannot achieve to make our game come to life. It'll just end up lacking.

Two of these atoms for example; Objectives and Rules are but two of many essentials required.

Objectives are important and are the essential driving force for any game. Objectives basically give you a purpose within a game. Objectives or Goals as they're also called is basically the things that a player must do, what does the player have to do in order to progress or complete to get to the next stage. Various objectives can be applicable; from capture or destroy missions to solving puzzles, territorial captures and so much more.

Rules are also another important aspect of a game as they provide boundaries to them. Rules can be divided up into three different parts; Setup, progression and resolution. Setup begins at the beginning of a game and is what helps with your progress at the beginning. Progression is primarily continuing your main objective. It is what you do during the game. Finally, Resolution is what happens at the end of a game.
